BIOGRAPHY
Karl Ernst Adolf Anderssen was born in Breslau, Prussia (now Wroc³aw,
Poland) on July 6, 1818. He learned chess from his father. He started his
brilliant chess career at age 30. An attacking player and a tactical genius,
he quickly became one of the best players in the world.
Around 1845 he graduated from Breslau University and became a matematics
and German instructor at the Friedrichs Gymnasium in Breslau, and later a
professor of Mathematics in the University of Breslau.
He won the great London Tournament of 1851. In this tournament he created
one of the most elegant games in history against Kieseritzky appropriately
called the Immortal Game.
For the next few years he was considered by many people to be the world's
best player. Then in 1858 he was beaten by the American player Paul Morphy in
a famous match held in Paris
in the 1862 he won London 1862, the first international round-robin event
(in which each participant plays a game against all the others) with a score
of twelve wins out of thirteen games. By that time, with theretirement of
Morphy, Anderssen was the undisputed, though unofficial World Champion. In
fact, Steinitz proclaimed himself World Champion after defeating Anderssen in
their match of 1866
Anderssen's greatest chess achievement came late in his life, when he won
Baden-Baden 1870, the strongest tournament ever held up to its time.
He died in Breslau on March 13, 1879 of a heart attack.
